Resignation Letter

A clear, professional letter of resignation for an employee in England and Wales, confirming your notice period and last day of work.

Applies in England and Wales. General information, not legal advice — talk to a lawyer about your situation.

This document isn't on sale in the United Kingdom yet.

A resignation letter gives your employer written notice that you are leaving and confirms your last day. Keeping it short and factual avoids any later argument about when you resigned.

When to use it

  • You have decided to leave your job and want to give notice properly.
  • Your contract says notice must be given in writing.

How it works

  1. Check your notice period — Your contract sets it. If it is silent, the legal minimum notice from an employee is one week once you have worked there for a month.
  2. Work out your last day — Count the notice period from the day you give the letter.
  3. Hand it in and keep a copy — Give or email it to your manager and keep a copy with the date.

Making it valid

  • Only your own signature is needed — no witness or notary.
  • You do not have to give a reason for resigning.

Common mistakes

  • Giving less notice than your contract requires.
  • Resigning in the heat of the moment — if you feel forced out, take advice first, because resigning can affect your legal position.

Questions

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?
No. You only need to make clear that you are resigning and when your notice ends.
Can I withdraw my resignation?
Only if your employer agrees. Once notice has been given, it cannot normally be taken back unilaterally.
Will I be paid for unused holiday?
Yes. You are entitled to be paid for statutory holiday you have accrued but not taken when your employment ends.
