FIR: First Information Report

Procedure

In simple words

An FIR is the written record the police make when they receive information about a cognizable offence (a serious offence for which police can generally act without a magistrate's order). It starts the police investigation.

More detail

Under the BNSS, the provision on information in cognizable cases is section 173. Information can be given orally or electronically; the person giving it is entitled to a copy of what is recorded.
