What is an Indemnity Bond?
An indemnity bond is a written promise by one person (the indemnifier) to compensate another (the indemnified party) for any loss they suffer because of a specific act or risk. Under the Indian Contract Act, 1872, this is a contract of indemnity.
Banks, employers, housing societies and government offices commonly ask for one before releasing money or documents — for example issuing a duplicate share certificate or fixed deposit receipt, or paying a deceased person’s dues to one legal heir.
When to use it
- A bank asks for one before issuing a duplicate FD receipt, DD or share certificate.
- Claim settlement or release of dues to a legal heir without a succession certificate.
- An authority releases a document on your assurance.

- In the recipient’s prescribed format where they have one — check first.
Stamp paper. Stamp duty on an indemnity bond is set by each state, often at a fixed value. Many banks specify the stamp paper value they need; ask before buying.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not using the bank’s or authority’s own format when they require it.
- Wrong stamp paper value.
- Understating the amount or scope, so the recipient rejects the bond.
