What is an IP Assignment Agreement (Work for Hire)?
An IP assignment (work for hire) agreement confirms that intellectual property created by an employee or contractor in the course of their engagement belongs to the company.
Under the Copyright Act, 1957, an employer is generally the first owner of copyright in work made by an employee in the course of employment. That default does not cover independent contractors and consultants, and it doesn’t neatly cover inventions — so a written assignment is the safe way to make sure the company owns what it pays for.
