What is a Society Bye-Laws (Registration)?

Bye-laws (rules and regulations) are the governing rules of a society — its objects, who can become a member, how the governing body is elected, how meetings are held and how funds are managed. Together with the memorandum of association, they are filed to register the society.

The Societies Registration Act, 1860 requires at least seven persons to subscribe to the memorandum. Many states have their own Societies Registration Act with their own forms and requirements, so check your state registrar’s checklist before filing.

When to use it

  • You are registering a literary, scientific, charitable, cultural or sports society.
  • A residents’ welfare association or club is formalising its rules.
  • An existing society is replacing outdated bye-laws.

Common mistakes to avoid
