What is a Vehicle Sale Agreement (Used Vehicle)?

A vehicle sale agreement records the sale of a used car, motorcycle or other vehicle between a private seller and buyer — the vehicle’s registration, chassis and engine numbers, the price and the handover date and time.

The agreement matters most for the gap between handover and RTO transfer. Until the registration is transferred, the seller remains the registered owner and can be held responsible for challans, accidents and offences involving the vehicle, so the agreement fixes the exact moment responsibility passed to the buyer.

When to use it

  • You are selling or buying a used vehicle privately, not through a dealer.
  • The price is paid and the vehicle handed over before the RTO transfer is complete.
  • You want a record of the time of handover for liability purposes.

What you'll need

Keep these details ready — the form asks for them in this order.

Seller

Seller full name · Seller address

Buyer

Buyer full name · Buyer address

Vehicle

Vehicle make/brand · Vehicle model · Registration number · Chassis number · Engine number

Sale

Sale amount · Sale date · City · State

How it works

  1. Enter seller and buyer

    Names and addresses of both.

  2. Identify the vehicle

Make, model, registration, chassis and engine numbers from the RC.

  3. Set price and date

    Sale amount and sale date.

  4. Preview, pay and download

Pay ₹90 and download for both to sign.

How to make it legally valid

  • Signed by seller and buyer, with the vehicle details matching the RC exactly.
  • Transfer of ownership applied for at the RTO (Forms 29 and 30, usually online through Vahan) within the time the Motor Vehicles Act allows.
  • Insurance transferred to the buyer.
  • Hypothecation removed first if the vehicle was financed.

After you sign it

Signing is not the last step for this document. These are what most authorities ask to see next.

  1. Apply for RC transfer promptly

File the transfer at the RTO with the RC, insurance, PUC and both parties’ ID.

  2. Transfer the insurance

Ask the insurer to transfer the policy to the buyer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Handing over the vehicle without applying for RC transfer.
  • Not checking for pending challans or loans before paying.
  • Chassis or engine numbers copied incorrectly.
